Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is recruiting dynamic, outgoing individuals who enjoy utilizing their creative and analytical talents to engage Teens and Young Adults in recreation programs, special events and activities. As a Recreation Leader you will work collaboratively with organizations, businesses and individuals to provide a variety of innovative programs, special events and activities for Teens and Young Adults. SPR manages a 6,400-acre park system covering about 12% of the total land area of Seattle and a recreation system that includes programming at 27 community centers, eight indoor swimming pools, two outdoor (summer) swimming pools, four environmental education centers, three teen centers, two small craft centers, an indoor tennis center, an outdoor stadium, over 400 ball fields, and much more.

This is a fully benefited position with part-time and full-time positions in the same title being filled. The work schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

This hiring process will also be used to fill temporary (non-benefited) opportunities in the same title.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more about what you’ll be doing:

Customer Service:


  • Greet teens, young adults, and all other customers in a positive manner in-person and over the telephone, providing information regarding the facility, programs, events, recreation or other activities occurring within the facility or department.
  • Explains policies, procedures and requirements related to class enrollment, program participation or facility use.
  • Engages participants to resolve problems and complaints using program and operations policies and procedures.

Financial Responsibilities and Administration:
  • Responsible for all administrative aspects of the program including public outreach, grant writing, collecting statistics, performance evaluations, program budgeting, and other office related tasks.
  • Monitor and provides monthly budget updates to supervisor along with quarterly and yearly projections.
  • Reconciles program receipts within 48 hours of purchase.
  • Implemented Policies and Procedures and establish administrative systems for paperwork, communication, and assignments to meet applicable deadlines, auditor/legal requirements, and Department standards.
  • Generates and retrieves reports from computerized registration system and/or manually completes reports on program plan development, post program highlights, program attendance, and other required reports required by department supervisor.
  • Manages other recreation staff and volunteers.
  • Provides needed information for reports and other requests.
  • Prepares and distributes marketing material for programs, special events, facilities, and services in cooperation with involved partners.
  • Represents SPR while building sponsorships, memorandums of agreement, community building and partnerships.
Programming:
  • Develops and implements a broad spectrum of recreational activities, programs and special events for teens and young adults.
  • Plans, organizes and leads multi-disciplinary programs after school, evening and weekends including during late night programs. Develops partnerships, and works cooperatively with other city departments, Seattle School District, and other community-based organizations which serve teens and young adults.
  • Engages with teens to develop a Teen Advisory Council to build leadership and guide program development.
  • Manages and oversee programs ensuring achievement of all specified outcomes and measurements by using data to inform programming needs and track outcomes.
Working with People:
  • Ability to provide excellent communication to both internal and external customers in oral and written formats.
  • Provides accurate and prompt information to colleagues, customers, and teammates.
  • Excellent ability to work in a team environment with a "can do" attitude that is positive and welcoming.
  • Able to work effectively with teens, young adults and other customers from diverse backgrounds in a highly dynamic, fast paced environment.

Other Duties: Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:
Requires one year experience in a community-based recreation program and an associate degree in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).


Desired Qualifications:
  • A solid customer service orientation and commitment to department values.
  • At least one year of experience fostering a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for all customers with a focus on teens and young adults.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with City of Seattle and SPR policy and procedures.
  • The ability to analyze community and group recreational needs, to select and adapt programs to meet those needs and to procure the materials and resources necessary for implementing recreation programs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of coordinating, planning, organizing, evaluating and supervising group social and recreational activities for teens and young adults.
  • Excellent "people skills" with ability to effectively deal with a wide range of diversity and cultures. within and external to the Teen Life Center and Recreation Division.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and problem-solving skills.
  • One year of experience in planning and implementing a program budget, developing program timelines and program administration.
  • One or more years of experience of creating and managing partnerships with citizens, businesses, youth serving agencies, and teens to design, implement and evaluate programs.
  • One or more years of experience in grant writing and developing other funding sources.
  • Candidate should have one or more years of experience using computer software products such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and any scheduling or presentation software.
  • Two years of experience working in an urban environment with persons from a broad range of cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated history of developing programs to meet the needs of teens and young adults in a diverse urban population.
  • Self-starter, proactive and accountable to deliverables.
  • Works well alone and on a team to accomplish task.
  • The ability to speak a second language is a plus!

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current State of Washington driver's license.
  • Must pass a background check and provide a full driving abstract prior to hire.
  • American Red Cross Multi-Media First Aid Card and CPR certification within six months of hire.
  • This position must be willing to drive city vehicles to transport program participants as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Requires working outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Normally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May require strenuous physical activity.

The full salary range for this position is $20.75 to $33.33 per hour.
